farmer matt

Del Val’s fruit grower, Matt Beekman, has been farming alongside his father since he was 14 years old. Matt, now 26, worked on DVU’s campus in the horticultural department throughout his studies and has a B.S. in Environmental Science from Delaware Valley University. He plans to expand his education with a Master’s degree in Business in the near future.

Matt believes he’s helped DVU grow by providing insight from his production background and with his fresh perspective on production agriculture. He notes that he tries to keep production methods clean and green, while looking to produce the most he can.

Spring is Matt’s favorite growing season because it’s a time when there is a clean slate and a new opportunity for a great growing year full of challenges and surprises. Matt’s favorite thing to grow is apples! He is currently working to develop a new small fruit area at DelVal, where students can see a variety of production methods for small fruit crops such as blueberries, grapes, and raspberries. In fact, Matt works very hard to cultivate a positive relationship with the students that work within his department; helping them excel through all aspects of their education and life.

Outside of DelVal, Matt helps to manage his family’s orchard and vineyard in Berks County where they produce fruit on over 150 acres! He hopes to one day return to his family’s Reading, PA farm full time, and work alongside his brother running the family farm.
